Virtus Bologna’s back-to-back losses against Hapoel Tel Aviv and Olimpia Milano show the team’s heavy dependence on Carsen Edwards and Matt Morgan. Can they regain offensive consistency and compete at the top level?
Virtus Bologna’s back-to-back losses against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague and Olimpia Milano at the Unipol Forum reveal more than just poor results. They highlight a team that struggles to find alternative solutions and maintain momentum when its offensive leaders falter.
The issue centers on Carsen Edwards. Virtus was built around his ability to ignite games, shift momentum, and lead with energy and shooting. The pattern is clear: when Edwards scores fewer than 20 points against top-level opponents, Virtus tends to lose. His two-point night against Hapoel Tel Aviv and the inconsistent performance in Milan are clear examples of this dependency.
The Milan game was especially telling: Edwards scored just 11 points in 31 minutes, shooting 1/10 from two and 3/10 from three, with four turnovers. Virtus played its best basketball in the second quarter—when Edwards was more present and helped set the rhythm—but it was only a brief glimpse. For the rest of the game, Milano’s deeper, more balanced squad dominated, leaving Virtus with only 63 points.
Adding to the challenge was the absence of Matt Morgan, the team’s sixth man and momentum-changer. Without him and with Edwards struggling, spacing tightened and offensive options from beyond the arc disappeared.
Virtus’ struggles are as much about identity as results. The team thrives when Edwards leads and Morgan contributes off the bench. When either is missing, margins shrink dramatically. The key now is turning this reliance into collective awareness, expanding contributions, and regaining confidence—especially with a long season ahead.
Yet there are encouraging signs. Even in defeat, Virtus shows discipline, willingness to sacrifice, and the drive to stay in games. Morgan’s return from injury and a revitalized Edwards could restore balance. The foundation is solid; the system works. Regaining offensive continuity simply means reigniting what Virtus has already proven it can do: compete, fight together, and turn talent into results.
